Marisol Escobar

Marisol Escobar was a French sculptor who worked in New York. When Marisol was 11 her mother committed suicide which deeply affected her. This didn't affect her drawing which she did constantly. In 1946 she started her formal art education by taking night classes at the Otis Art Institute and the Jepson Art Institute. She then studied art at Escole des Beaux-Arts. In the 1960s the pop art culture embraced her as one of it's members. Marisol's art has a combination of folk art,dada, and surrealism. It comments on the social construct of women. She used assemblages of wood carvings, plaster,drawings, photography, painting, and pieces of contemporary clothes in her work.
